Magical Magnolias

Our stunning & magical Magnolias

There are few things more magnificent in early spring than a magnolia.

Magnolias are trees or shrubs with astonishing goblet- or star-shaped flowers that are admired icons of spring and summer. Evergreen magnolias are particularly good for wall-training.

Magnolia is a large genus of about 210 flowering plant species in the subfamily Magnolioideae of the family Magnoliaceae

The name Magnolia first appeared in 1703, for a flowering tree from the island of Martinique. It is named after French botanist Pierre Magnol.

Plant in full sun to give the best growth and flowering. Magnolias thrive in any fertile, moist garden soil that is not dry and alkaline, but for dry, alkaline soils consider Magnolia grandiflora and Magnolia stellata.

How to plant magnolias

Choose a sheltered site.

Make sure that the hole is big enough, and loosen the soil at the bottom with a fork.

Ensure that the existing soil level is no deeper than the soil in the container in which the magnolia came.

Backfill with a mixture of topsoil and good compost.

Newly planted trees can take a few years to settle down before they flower. Keep the faith and mulch well; your patience will be rewarded.

Magnolia trees can also be grown in large containers.
