Pistacia Vera
Pistacia vera. commonly known as the pistachio tree, is a small deciduous tree native to Central Asia and the Middle East. It is a small tree with red-green foliage at first that later turns grey. The tree produces clusters of small, reddish flowers in the spring, followed by the development of the pistachio nuts, which are encased in a hard, beige shell with a distinctive split when ripe. The tree grows slowly but can live to be quite old. Pistachio trees can tolerate high temperatures and drought and are winter hardy (-10°C). However, they do not do well in high humidity. Can be container-grown on a sunny patio or balcony. Pistachio nuts are delicious and also healthy, as they contain phosphorus, iron, zinc, calcium and vitamin B.
