Carica Papaya

Carica papaya, commonly known as papaya or Pawpaw, is a tropical fruit tree native to the Americas but now cultivated in many tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. It’s characterized by its fast-growing nature, and in the right conditions, can reach heights of up to 6 meters with a single straight trunk. The papaya tree has large, deeply lobed leaves clustered at the apex of the trunk, forming a canopy. The fruit is large and oblong, typically green when immature and turning yellow-orange when ripe – though in this country Papaya is grown for interest as a foliage plant.

They are not completely frost-hardy so need to be kept in a greenhouse in the winter months. They make a very interesting conservatory plant and are as visually attractive as a palm tree.
