Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Teller Red’ – also known as Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Rotkehlchen’ is a stunning cultivar of the classic bigleaf hydrangea. It is known for its large, mophead flower clusters that bloom in shades of vivid pink to deep purple-blue, depending on soil pH. The name ‘Rotkehlchen’ translates to “Robin” in German, likely referencing the deep pink colour reminiscent of the breast of a robin bird.

This hydrangea variety typically grows to a compact size, making it ideal for smaller gardens or containers. Its glossy, dark green foliage provides an attractive backdrop to the showy blooms, which appear in summer and often last well into autumn.

Like other bigleaf hydrangeas, ‘Teller Red’ prefers partial shade with morning sun and moist, well-draining soil. It can benefit from regular pruning to encourage new growth and maintain its compact shape. With its vibrant flowers and manageable size, Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Rotkehlchen’ adds a delightful pop of colour to any garden landscape.
