Ensete ventricosum ‘Maurelii’
Ensete ventricosum Maurelii, commonly known as the Abyssinian banana or Ethiopian banana, is a striking, fast-growing ornamental plant prized for its large, paddle-shaped leaves and vibrant red-purple colouring. Belonging to the banana family (Musaceae), this cultivar is primarily grown for its foliage rather than its inedible fruit. Its dramatic appearance makes it a popular choice for tropical and subtropical gardens, where it adds a bold, exotic touch. Ensete ventricosum Maurelii thrives in warm, humid climates and requires well-drained soil and plenty of sunlight to flourish. In autumn, cut the plants down and either dig them up and transfer them into pots, which you can move indoors until late spring. In milder regions, it may be possible to wrap the plants with a thick layer of horticultural fleece and mulch around the roots with well-rotted manure or compost. However you overwinter them, Ensete ventricosum plants should regrow quickly from late spring onwards.
