Hydrangea macrophylla Red

Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Red’ is a stunning shrub known for its large, mophead-like clusters of vibrant red flowers. These bold blooms appear in summer, creating a striking contrast against the dark green foliage. This hydrangea variety is prized for its ability to add a pop of intense colour to gardens, borders, and containers. It typically reaches a moderate size, making it versatile for various garden settings, and it often thrives in partial shade, though it appreciates some sun for optimal flowering.

Hydrangeas give their best red flowers when grown in soil with a neutral to alkaline pH. Therefore, if you want to make sure that your hydrangeas flowers stay red (and don’t turn mauve or blue), you will need to make sure that the soil pH does not slip below 6. The easiest way to do this (if necessary) is to apply an annual sprinkling of lime.
