Allium Karataviense
Allium karataviense, commonly known as Turkestan onion, is a distinctive and ornamental plant belonging to the Allium genus, which is part of the larger Amaryllidaceae family. This perennial bulbous plant is native to Central Asia, particularly the Karatau Mountains region in Kazakhstan.
This heirloom variety allium is celebrated for its unique and eye-catching appearance. It typically grows to a height of around 20cm and forms compact clusters of broad, greyish-green, waxy leaves. These heavily textured leaves can resemble the foliage of some succulent plants. They provide an interesting contrast to the usual slender and grass-like leaves commonly associated with the Allium genus.
The most striking feature of Allium karataviense is its flower head. It produces a single, large, globe-like cluster of flowers that emerges on a relatively short stem from the centre of the plant. The flowers are typically star-shaped and have a creamy-white to pale pink colour, often with a slightly purple or pink tinge.
For best effect plant the bulbs in rock gardens, border plantings, and even containers. The plant prefers well-draining soil and a sunny to partially shaded location. It tends to thrive in regions with a colder climate.
Because of its distinctive foliage and eye-catching flowers, use Allium karataviense to create interesting visual contrasts in garden beds and borders. Its low growth habit makes it suitable for foreground planting or as a complement to taller plants.
Height: 20cm approx. Plant 15cm apart in a sunny or partly shady position. Flowers in June.
