Araucaria Araucana
The Araucaria araucana, commonly known as the Monkey Puzzle tree, is an ancient evergreen conifer native to the temperate forests of Chile and Argentina. This distinctive tree can reach heights of 30-40 meters and is characterized by its unique, spirally arranged, stiff, and sharp leaves that give it a spiky appearance. Its branches form a symmetrical, umbrella-like shape, and the tree is dioecious, with separate male and female cones. The Araucaria araucana is both a living fossil and a national symbol of Chile, valued for its ornamental beauty and hardy nature.
‘The monkey puzzle was given its name by an observer who thought monkeys couldn’t climb the spiky branches.’
