Aesculus hippocastanum

Aesculus hippocastanum, commonly known as the horse chestnut, is a large deciduous tree native to the Balkan Peninsula. It is widely cultivated throughout temperate regions for its ornamental value and distinctive palmate leaves composed of five to seven leaflets. In spring, it produces showy white flowers with red or yellow markings, arranged in tall, pyramid-shaped clusters called panicles. Its fruit, known as conkers, are spiny green capsules that contain shiny brown seeds with a light patch known as a “scar.” Despite its name, horse chestnuts are not related to true chestnuts and are not suitable for consumption due to their toxic compounds. Instead, they are valued for their beauty and shade, often found in parks, gardens, and urban landscapes.
