Corylus avellana

Corylus avellana, commonly known as the European hazel, is a deciduous shrub native to Europe and western Asia. It typically grows up to 6 meters in height and forms dense thickets in woodlands, hedgerows, and along the edges of forests. The leaves are rounded with serrated edges, and the branches often bear clusters of small, yellowish-green flowers in early spring. The plant produces edible nuts known as hazelnuts, encased in a husk that matures into a papery covering. These nuts are a popular ingredient in confectionery and cuisine, prized for their rich, nutty flavour. Additionally, Corylus avellana plays a vital ecological role, providing habitat and food for various wildlife species.
