Pistacia chinensis
Pistacia chinensis, commonly known as the Chinese pistache, is a small to medium-sized deciduous tree native to China and Taiwan. It is a member of the cashew family, Anacardiaceae. The tree is prized for its ornamental qualities, particularly its brilliant Autumn foliage.
In the spring and summer, Pistacia chinensis features attractive, glossy green compound leaves that consist of several leaflets. As autumn approaches, the leaves turn vivid shades of orange, red, and purple, creating a striking display of colour. This autumn foliage is one of the tree’s most appealing characteristics, making it a popular choice for landscaping and ornamental planting.
In addition to its visual appeal, the Chinese pistache is valued for its durability and adaptability to a variety of soil types and climates. It is relatively drought-tolerant once established and can withstand periods of heat and dryness.
The tree also produces small clusters of inconspicuous flowers in the spring, followed by small, round, reddish fruits in autumn. These fruits are enjoyed by birds and wildlife.
