Acorus gramineus Ogon
Acorus gramineus ‘Ogon’, commonly known as Golden Variegated Sweet Flag, is a delightful ornamental grass-like plant renowned for its striking foliage. This perennial herbaceous plant belongs to the Acoraceae family and is native to Japan and eastern Asia.
The ‘Ogon’ variety is prized for its vibrant, sword-shaped leaves that are a bright golden-yellow, adding a burst of colour to gardens and landscapes. These leaves often have a distinct green stripe down the centre, creating a beautiful contrast. The plant typically grows in dense, clumping tufts, reaching a height of around 50cm and spreading slowly to form attractive ground cover.
In addition to its appealing appearance, Acorus gramineus ‘Ogon’ emits a pleasant, sweet fragrance when its leaves are crushed or brushed against. It thrives in moist to wet soil conditions, making it an excellent choice for bog gardens, water features, or the edges of ponds and streams. It can also tolerate some shade, though its foliage colour tends to be more intense when grown in partial sun.
Low-maintenance and versatile, this plant is a popular choice for adding bright colour and texture to various garden settings, from formal landscapes to more naturalistic water gardens. Its compact size also makes it suitable for containers, borders, and rock gardens. Additionally, it is generally resistant to pests and diseases, making it a hassle-free addition to any garden.
