Quercus Palustris
Quercus palustris, commonly known as the Pin Oak, is a deciduous tree species belonging to the Fagaceae family. Native to the eastern and central regions of North America, the Pin Oak is renowned for its distinctive growth habit, attractive foliage, and adaptability to various environments.
This is a medium to large-sized tree that typically reaches heights of more than 12 meters, and spreads out with a crown that can span more than 8 meters in width.
The leaves of Quercus palustris are a prominent feature, displaying a deep green colour in the summer and transitioning to vibrant shades of red, bronze, or russet in autumn. The leaves are deeply lobed with pointed sinuses, and they create an elegant, feathery appearance.
One of the defining traits of Pin Oak is its distinctive branching structure. The lower branches tend to droop gracefully before curving upwards at the tips, often forming a dense, pyramidal or columnar shape in young trees. As the tree matures, the crown may become more rounded.
The acorns produced by Pin Oak are relatively small, with shallow cups and a distinctive cap that resembles a “pin,” giving the tree its common name. These acorns provide a valuable food source for wildlife, including squirrels and birds.
