Crinodendron Hookerianum

Crinodendron hookerianum, commonly known as the Chilean lantern tree or simply Crinodendron, is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to the temperate rainforests of Chile and Argentina. This elegant and attractive plant possesses superb ornamental qualities, including its beautiful pendulous red flowers and glossy, dark green leaves.

The foliage of Crinodendron hookerianum consists of simple, elliptical to lance-shaped leaves that are leathery in texture. They are dark green on the upper surface and slightly paler on the underside, creating an attractive contrast. The most striking feature of Crinodendron hookerianum is its distinctive, lantern-shaped flowers. These pendulous, bell-shaped blossoms hang from the branches in clusters, making them look like glowing lanterns suspended from the plant. The flowers are bright red and have prominent, long, and slender stamens that extend beyond the petals.

The flowering season for this shrub typically occurs in late spring to early summer. During this time, the abundant striking lantern-like flowers can last for several weeks.

Regular pruning can help maintain a tidy and attractive shape for the shrub. You can prune it after flowering to remove any dead or overgrown branches.

It is primarily grown as an ornamental plant in gardens and landscapes. Its exquisite flowers make it a popular choice for adding a touch of elegance and colour to shaded or woodland gardens. It can also be grown in containers.
